A Clarification
In a previous post I alluded to the problems of having an editor vs. not having one, which is, of course, the reality for web cartoonists. I believe I suggested that it’s a bit of a double edged sword. There are times when a cartoonist might benefit from having an editor and times when they might be pulling their hair out because of it. This came to mind again because alert reader and creator of the fabulous comic Casually Employed, Bill Murphy, made the following comment about the Silverback jacket in last week’s strip: “That better not be real Gorilla fur! :P.” Now I was, of course, amused by the comment, but it made me think that I really should’ve said something in the comic about that and that having an editor might have been beneficial in this instance since he or she might’ve flagged it. But it just didn’t occur to me that the jacket could be construed as being real gorilla fur, I guess because it’s impossible since it’s a drawing! 😀 But still I feel that I should’ve addressed it. So I’m addressing it now and Bill’s comment inspired this comic, so thanks for that Bill!
On another note, I’d like to ask my readers a question. With my reduced posting, are you finding the current storyline is taking too long to resolve itself? All of my previous storylines have been 21 or 24 strips long. But at a posting rate of 3 strips per week, I feel like the pacing was okay. But now I think maybe I’m dragging this Stan Dickie storyline on a little too long (and I know Stan is not happy about it!) Any comments?
You need a disclaimer: “No gorillas are harmed in the making of this comic, unless you consider mental anguish harmful”.
As to length of story line, IMHO, it’s irrelevant as long as the story is entertaining. My typical adventures run 6 months – twice weekly.
Ha ha! Gus HAS been complaining of mental anguish, now that you mention it.
Thanks for chiming in, J.P. Your comic is very well paced, indeed! It might help if I can commit to twice a week…
First of all, Chris; I am honored. 😉
As for your pacing, I don’t find a problem with it at all. I’m entertained every time you have an update. And your current storyline follows the theme of your comic. If you were to write a storyline about Gus going to New York City for a desk job, I can see that kind of a storyline going too long because it’s not the theme of this comic or the reason everyone enjoys returning to Gorilla in the Midst. I think your storyline is just fine. 😀
Good points, Bill. I make sure Gus doesn’t go to New York for that desk job. Pretty Sure he doesn’t want a desk job anyway. But a trip to New York would be fun for both of us!
The story line is fine Chris, and I’m glad it’s not real Gorilla fur!
Thanks David. Don’t forget, 15 grand will get you a sloppy drawing of a jacket! I’ll even sign it for you! 🙂
Could this “Top Quality” stuff be rat fur?
I think your postings are going well, Chris. It doesn’t bother me that it’s only once a week.
If it’s rat fur, I hope Gus didn’t have to… um… take care of the rats himself! Thanks for the advice, Joseph!
No skin off your nose. But off your back is a completely different matter!
Tell your tale how you want to, but if you feel you want to accelerate the story because of less updates, go for it. I think that’s what I would do.
Skin of Gus’ back would be bad… but he could shave it maybe? As for the updates, my inclination is to speed things up too. But first I have to figure out how to end this storyline! These stories always seem to want to keep going, almost like they write themselves…:)
Yer doggone right I ain’t happy about it feller! Enough already! If not I’s gonna write a song about you… and it won’t be a perty one!!
Do your worst Stan! Or your best! Whatever!
If you draw me some matching shoes………..?
Hmmm.. 15 grand for a quick drawing of a jacket AND shoes. What the hell, just for you though Gruhn!!
You’re lucky you said it was a fake, Chris… I was about to sue your jacket off.
On another note, anyone interested in the fur jacket drawing, contact me and I’ll draw one for 5,000. Yes, that’s a 50% discount!!!
Uh oh, yours would be better than mine, no doubt! Still, it wouldn’t be an authentic GITM jacket drawing! So we’ll see how this plays out! So far, I have zero orders, how ’bout you?
I feel that a comic strip story line should be a week, no more. Just my 2 cents.
Appreciate the comment, Tom! But I will likely keep writing longer stories, but I may try to shorten them a little!
It’s probably made of cat fur. Dead cat fur
I actually have a grey cat!! I hope he’s okay!! :'(
Whew! He is!! 🙂
